So last year, I walked 147 days, or 147 miles.
My big deal in 2006 was never miss a day, not one single day. 147 consecutive days.
This year, I’m working the numbers game. Our usual walk outside was about a mile and a half. So I know I can do a mile and a half between 20 (very fast walking) and 40 (more an amble really) minutes.
Walking 20-40 minues a day should be doable. But it’s not going to stop the thing if I don’t walk every day, in a row, all days all week, and on and on.
What I’m aiming for, is to walk 500 miles in 2007. That’s 1.3 miles a day, so it’s under my walking average. On the weekends, Jeff and I would regularly walk for 2.5 to 3 miles. I’m going to keep a daily tally, and a weekly and a monthly tally, to see how the numbers add up.
500 miles, 365 days, that’s 1.37 miles a day, 9.62 miles a week, 41.66 miles a calendar month.
There’s my goal, let’s see how I do!

I started the walking thing in 2006 on Wednesday 26 July, and finished it on Tuesday 19 December. Winding up the work year, Jeff being sick, and then me being sick meant the walking just stopped there for 2006.
On average, I walked about a mile a day, as many days later in the year I walked more than a mile, and some days earlier on, and on late late nights, I walked less.
6 days in July, 31 days in August, 30 days in September, 31 days in October, 30 days in November, and 19 days in November. That’s 147 days, 21 weeks, 5.25 months.
That’s also 147 miles. That’s me walking from my house, to Philadelphia, and back, and then back to Philadelphia again. That’s 5.6 marathons.
At approximately 128 calories per mile, that’s 18,816 calories. Which I quite probably ate, but it means they were burned off, not busily melding themselves to my gut. 3500 calories = 1 pound, so that’s 5.37 additional pounds not making my pants not do up.
That’s my big new exercise achievement for 2006. And now for 2007.
